When to Do a Lifestyle Newborn Session in Washington, DC


One of the questions I hear most often as a Washington, DC newborn photographer is: “When is the best time for a newborn lifestyle session?” The answer depends on the type of photos you’re hoping for and the season of life your family is in.


Unlike traditional studio newborn photography, which is usually scheduled in the first two weeks of life, a lifestyle newborn session offers more flexibility. Since the focus is on connection, cuddles, and your family’s love—not intricate posing—these sessions can take place anytime in the first couple of months after your baby arrives.


The First 2 Weeks: Sleepy + Curled Up


If you’d like photos of your baby when they are still very fresh, tiny, and sleepy, schedule your in-home newborn session within the first 10–14 days. During this time, babies are more likely to snooze through the session, and we can capture those peaceful, curled-up moments along with your first days together at home.


Weeks 3–6: Awake + More Expressive


Between three and six weeks, babies tend to have more alert moments. This can be a wonderful time for newborn lifestyle photography if you’d love to capture your baby’s curious eyes, stretches, and early smiles. These sessions feel a bit more interactive while still holding onto that newborn sweetness.


Up to 3 Months: Still Little, Still Precious


If the early weeks fly by, don’t worry! Lifestyle newborn sessions can still beautifully document your baby up to three months old. At this stage, your little one has filled out with adorable rolls and is starting to connect even more with you—smiling, cooing, and responding to your voices.
